The Psychology of Color

August 31, 2012 Mike Thomson

What is color? Color is the aspect of things caused by differing qualities of the light reflected or emitted by them. Color is everywhere and it is an integral part of the human experience. Humans experience color just as they experience taste. There are several aspects that influence an individual’s experience with color. Our upbringing, political views, cultural backgrounds, religious beliefs, the places we are from, the weather, and the language that we speak are just a few aspects of our lives that shape our relationship with color. In Feng shui colors are very important towards the final achievement and they are used to emit energy. Yes, they release energy! Recent research has shown that color can influence mood and human state of mind. There are professionals that conduct studies in hospitals, clinics, and other facilities where the ultimate goal is to deliver maximum comfort or to improve the state of mind of patients through the use of space and color. We associate color with most decisions we make in our lives. Color should be a critical part of your design piece. It can either have a positive or negative impact on sales, and it has the ability to make people stare longer or to toss a piece immediately. The following is an image of associations based on what certain colors are most used for and the type of feelings that we associate them with. These associations are based on Western culture in the continent of North America only.

The color that you chose for your piece can attract immediate attention, it can create a mood, and it can also enhance feelings or trigger emotions. There are some professional associations that study color, The Pantone Color Institute and The Color Association of America. The next time you start your design make sure to take in consideration the Psychology of Color.
