How Can Google Goggles Help Small Businesses?

March 1, 2010 Gary Ritkes

In an effort to continue to bring innovative ideas and concepts to the SproutLoud audience of users, I see some interesting opportunities that lie ahead with the introduction of Google Goggles, the search engine tool based on image recognition search.

Google Goggles brings visual search to the web. Google Goggles currently supports photo-based searching for: books, DVDs, landmarks, logos, contact info, artwork, businesses, products, barcodes, and plain text.

Here's how it works: When you capture an image, Google breaks it down into object-based signatures. It then compares those signatures against every item it can find in its image database. Within seconds, it returns the results to you, ordered by rank. Some results are returned before you even snap a photo, too, thanks to seamless integration of GPS and compass functionality.

So how does this benefit the SproutLoud user group in the Business to Consumer category? Since SproutLoud manages the assets and promotional campaigns for the users through its marketing dashboard, any manufacturer's suggested retail promotional offers will be more readily available to the local business for inserting into their website content. Once this content is pushed to their site, the customer will have access to all current promotional offers that are either supported by the manufacturer, or only supported by the business owner. Since the business will be able to customize their offer and then post it to their site, they will be making coupons with offer expirations available immediately to the consumer. The consumer uses Google Goggles before entering the business location and will already have downloaded the offer to present at check out.

A second example is geared towards the user being a Business to Business account, collecting contact information from a business card received at a trade show. The sales rep takes a picture of the card, and copies it into his corporate CRM system which is linked to his SproutLoud account for campaign distribution. Now that’s automation of prospect communications.
